Double pushchairs or Tandem pushchair – What are the key differences?
In this article, we will aim to look at the different pros and cons of double pushchairs and tandem pushchairs. Twin prams or pushchairs are a great solution to families if you are expecting twins or expecting a second child but still need a pushchair for your first. With so many different prams and chairs on the market, it can seem a little overwhelming as to what product would be right to purchase. This guide will hopefully help with that.
Tandem pushchair
With a tandem pushchair, the seats are inline rather than side by side. This means that a tandem pushchair is, in theory, the same width as a single pushchair. This is great for moving around shops or using on narrow paths. They are often easier to steer and manage. A tandem pushchair is also regarded as a good option for sleeping newborns as you can manoeuvre your pram through a front door without having to disturb them. Due to the position of the seats, a tandem pushchair can also help stop your kids from disturbing each other for example waking each other up,poking and snatching toys and snacks which can be really helpful.
Double Travel systems are usually based on a tandem design and like our own models offer a combination or car seat, carrycots and seats. This means that the chairs can be really flexible and offer a number of different positions and configurations.
Pros
Much easier to use in tighter spaces
Can fit through single doors
Configurable layouts and travel system options.
Cons
Can be a little heavier than side by side models
Can offer less storage than side to side models.
Double Pushchair (side by side)
A standard double pushchair where children sit next to each other can be a good idea if your children want to interact with each other. They can be a little bit lighter than tandem pushchairs and because their weight is more evenly distributed they can sometimes be easier to guide up and down curbs. Probably the main disadvantage of a side by side model is that they are obviously wider. This can cause issues in a busy supermarket or anywhere where you need to access through a single door. They also tend to have less configurable positions and most travel systems will be with a tandem model.
Pros
Can be lighter than tandem models
Often have good storage under the seats
Cons
Can be more difficult to steer
More difficult for manoeuvring through tight spaces.
Not so easy to use on narrow pavements or supermarkets and shops
